"Avatar 3D" is Awesome!!
On my grading break today, I went to see Avatar 3D. Although the plotting and acting are pretty much par for the course for a sci fi film, I think this does mark a new stage in the developing technology of fantasy films. The fusing of live action and CGI is flawless, quite advanced, and the scenic designers and others responsible for constructing this alien world, Pandora, have outdone themselves. The colors, the images, the sounds, all come together with the 3D projection to create a superb and haunting effect. The native creatures - both humanoid and animaloid - are also extraordinary, and the ability to fuse actors with CGI figures has become so advanced as to beggar belief. James Cameron and Fox spent a fortune to make this, but they should earn it back, because the entire thing is spectacularly entertaining and should really pack them in for many weeks as word spreads. Despite the length, I'd like to see it again. And this is not one to save for home viewing - it needs the big screen, big sound system, and 3D effects. (I'm not as crazy about James Horner's score - I think the Lord of the Rings Trilogy did the music part better.) As for the acting - well, no academy award performances here, but Sam Worthington in the lead role is credible, and the supportings are all OK. Sigourney Weaver does her tough space woman bit, which she's got patented by now. But the bottom line is that I am impressed... Congratulations, guys.
