Karate Kid - 2010 Film
I never saw the original Karate Kid film. There was so little playing here to take my Mom to see (Ormond Beach, Florida) that we ended up seeing this one.... and it wasn't bad. In fact, it was great for Mom. Easy to follow the plot, everyone's lines were clearly spoken and recorded, and the pace was fast enough to keep us both engaged. Jaden Smith, the kid who plays Dre, was excellent. Jackie Chan, usually a member of the school of broad acting, was actually subtle and charming. Taraji P. Henson as the kid's Mom was supposed to be clueless about her son, and she was! The Chinese locations are breathtaking, the music by James Horner in his usual over-insistent vein. Things are quite predictable, as far as the plot goes, even if you haven't seen the previous film, but they manage to inject some suspense into the requisite scenes. Taken altogether, not bad for a summer film.
